The task of leadership is not to put greatness into people, but to elicit it, for the greatness is there already.
This quote by John Buchan reminds me to stay focused on the fundamentals of treating people correctly in Leadership settings. “Correctly” does not refer to treating with dignity, respect, and common courtesy, those are a given in my opinion. In order to uncover the true genius in your junior and mid-level employees, you must first let them earn their paycheck and proving their worth through allowing them to think through problem solving and suggesting ways to improve current processes.
Here are but a few open-ended questions to spark innovation within your team:
Allowing others a change to lead based on their own experience is an essential part of successful team building. I don’t lead followers, I discover future leaders.
