So we are sitting at the end of this year and have worked hard to make our mark in our career. You have spent several hours in front of your PC , after spending whole year working strenuously, it’s now time to sit back, relax and snuggle yourself with a hot cup of cocoa and never ending Netflix queue. Irrespective of the fact that you are working or are searching for a job, you should never miss the fact that you should never undermine the importance of giving a jump-start to your career.

There is no right time than today. It’s time that you use this time judiciously to make it the best for you in the coming year. For those who are willing to get a new job, this is the right time to get all your ducks in a row and for those who are already working, this is the time to focus and review what you have achieved in the past and what you can do in the coming year.

 

Here’s a list of 20 pointers that will help you boost your IT career:

  1. Jot down your accomplishments – it’s important that you write down your accomplishments along with your duties. This will give you an overview of what you have achieved and what extra you have done apart from your regular KRAs. This will help you present your achievements in front of your management.
  2. Up skilling yourself- Make sure that you always try to learn more. Especially if you are an IT professional or are willing to enter this domain. Having excellence on your domain knowledge is good but having extra knowledge works as a cherry on the cake, it makes you have a multi-faceted person and you can experiment with other job profile.
  3. Networking is the key – For any profession networking is the key to success, irrespective of your domain, networking will help you progress in your job. Take every opportunity to introduce yourself, ask about the career goals of others and present yours too. This will help you multiply your network.  
  4. Present yourself as a self-starter – A person who is an initiator or self-starter are often considered as an integral part of a successful team.
  5. Be a problem solver – The world of IT is very dynamic and it requires the professionals to be solution-driven, a person who is a problem solver is always welcomed by the company and at the same time it presents you as an optimistic person.
  6. Revamp your resume highlighting your achievements
  7. Make sure that you use your LinkedIn profile to connect with all the major IT professionals and companies.
  8. Read, read and read; develop reading habits, read career boosting blogs which will help you imply the same in your real life.
  9. Concentrate on one skill development at a time. Look for the skill which is in demand and make sure that you master this skill.
  10. Talk about your strength , it’s important that you present yourself as assort person, companies are looking for individuals who can easily overcome strenuous situation without affecting work productivity.
  11. Flexibility is the key, in order to be successful in today’s competitive world, one must be flexible with work timings and work structure. IT the world is demanding and requires individual to work for longer hours , being flexible not only makes you work easily but also doesn’t builds stress and at the same time it will help you earn brownie points.
  12. Over-confidence is dangerous. Being confident in your work is good but over-confidence negatively impacts your career.
  13. Having knowledge about different skills is good but this is desirable in a company where an individual had to wear many hats due to understaffing, but now we have companies who are looking for specific skills. So, make sure that you have gained expertise in one skill.
  14. Work on your looks, make sure that your looks always speak volume about your personality.
  15. Manage your social media presence.
  16. Make sure that you don’t settle for a job or a profile which is lesser than your calibre.
  17. Use right words at right time.
  18. Make right use of holiday season, this is the best time to make the most. Use this time to connect with your clients and revive old clients. Don’t forget to send thank you notes to all.
  19. Maintain a healthy lifestyle and eat well.
